Rather than focusing on a single technology, PRS demonstrated how high-speed roadway profiling, LiDAR scanning, digital design, and 3D machine control can work together to help contractors identify challenges earlier, improve field execution, and create better documentation throughout the life of a project.Bringing Digital Precision to Roadway Construction with Pavement Recycling SystemsPresenter: Ryan Zenahlik, Technical Program ManagerKey FeaturesHigh-speed inertial profiling using vehicle-mounted laser and GPS technology to measure roadway profile and smoothness without requiring lane closuresVehicle-mounted LiDAR scanning that captures detailed existing roadway conditions and geometry at highway speedsDigital surface modeling and planning tools that help identify problem areas, material requirements, leveling needs, and potential project risks before construction begins3D machine control that connects digital design intent directly to milling and paving equipment in the fieldRelative-depth machine control that uses existing surface data and project design information to improve milling and paving consistencyExtractable roadway data that can support quantity calculations, utility and striping information, project planning, and field layoutDigital as-builts and quality-assurance documentation that provide contractors with objective project records and data to support completed work Click here to watch full presentation.Impact on the IndustryRoadway construction has traditionally relied heavily on field experience, conventional surveying, and real-time decision-making as conditions change. PRS demonstrated how today's data-capture and machine-control technologies can give contractors a much more detailed understanding of those conditions before the first machine arrives onsite.By combining roadway profiling and LiDAR data with digital planning and machine control, contractors can identify potential issues earlier, improve material and production planning, increase consistency between crews, reduce some of the risks associated with changing field conditions, and create a digital record of the work performed. The presentation also demonstrated that the applications extend beyond large highway projects. Zenahlik discussed uses for concrete contractors, striping companies, parking lot contractors, and smaller roadway projects, emphasizing that the return on investment will vary depending on the contractor and the project. The committee discussion also touched on the future role of artificial intelligence. PRS is currently evaluating and deploying AI in other areas of its business, while technologies such as automated data extraction and more advanced analysis could eventually add another layer of intelligence to roadway data and digital construction workflows.Looking AheadThe AGC Construction Technology Committee is currently evaluating potential Tech Think Tank speakers for its next quarterly meeting. Topics discussed by the committee included identity verification and cybersecurity technology, as well as AI-powered jobsite safety and risk-management solutions. The AGC Technology Committee remains committed to identifying and evaluating technologies that help AGC members improve productivity, collaboration, safety, compliance, and innovation.
