By AGC San Diego ConstructionTechnology Committee Chair, Mandy Irvine McClure On November 21, the AGC Technology Committee continued its Tech Think Tank speaker series with presentations from Hyperframe, SubSmart, and a special briefing from SDG&E on cybersecurity for construction and critical infrastructure. The Tech Think Tank series highlights emerging technologies that support efficiency, safety, compliance, and digital transformation across the construction industry. Modernizing Steel Framing with Hyperframe Presenter: Ken Sobel, CEO Hyperframe introduced its digital framing technology designed to modernize cold-formed steel framing through software-driven design and precision-manufactured components. By pairing digital layouts with pre-cut, installation-ready framing kits, Hyperframe aims to speed up construction schedules while reducing field errors and rework. Key Features: • Digital Design → Field Execution: Software-driven framing plans that translate directly into installation-ready components. • Precision-Manufactured Kits: Pre-cut, labeled steel framing parts that reduce errors and eliminate field measuring. • Speed & Efficiency: Significantly faster installation times compared to traditional CFS framing methods. • Reduced Rework: Digital-to-physical workflow increases accuracy and consistency across trades. Impact on the Industry: Hyperframe’s approach reduces labor hours, lowers rework, and improves predictability on framing projects. By bridging digital design with field-ready assemblies, the platform supports contractors facing labor shortages and rising project complexity. The system centralizes COIs, safety documentation, HR forms, and workforce credentials, helping contractors maintain visibility and reduce administrative burden. Key Features: • Automated Onboarding: Collect, track, and manage subcontractor documents in a streamlined digital workflow. • COI & Safety Compliance Tracking: Automated reminders and expiration management for insurance, safety certificates, and required documents. • Workforce Visibility: Central database for worker records, credentials, badges, and project assignments. • HR & Safety Form Management: Digital I-9s, W-4s, certifications, and safety acknowledgements. Impact on the Industry: SubSmart reduces administrative burden and eliminates delays caused by missing or outdated documentation. By digitizing qualification and compliance management, contractors gain better visibility, lower risk, and improved collaboration with their subcontractors. The session emphasized how interconnected systems—construction technology, jobsite networks, IoT devices, and contractor access—can create vulnerabilities without proper controls. Key Takeaways: • Growing risk of cyberattacks targeting power systems and infrastructure projects • Importance of contractor cybersecurity maturity, including access control and vendor management • Increased regulatory pressure around cyber protections for grid-connected systems • Practical steps contractors can adopt today: MFA, network segmentation, asset inventory, and employee awareness Impact on the Industry: As construction teams deploy more connected tools and interface with utility infrastructure, cybersecurity is becoming a core safety and risk-management requirement. SDG&E encouraged contractors to evaluate internal controls and understand how their systems interact with the broader grid. Looking Ahead The Tech Think Tank series will continue on February 27, 2026. Speaker selections are currently in progress, and committee members are encouraged to submit suggestions or vendor referrals. The committee remains committed to exploring technologies that support AGC members in productivity, compliance, safety, cybersecurity, and innovation.
