The California Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board implemented a new regulation Heat Illness Prevention in Indoor Places of Employment on July 23, 2024. The regulation applies to all indoor work areas where the temperature equals or exceeds 82 degrees Fahrenheit when employees are present. Certain work environments, such as teleworking and specific public sector facilities, are exempt from this regulation. Major Requirements: Employers must provide sufficient, suitably cool drinking water close to work areas. Employers must establish cool-down areas maintained below 82 degrees Fahrenheit, if feasible. Temperature and heat index must be monitored, and appropriate control measures must be implemented. Employers are required to develop and maintain an Indoor Heat Illness Prevention Plan that includes procedures for water provision, cool-down areas, emergency response, and training. Cal/OSHA has two upcoming webinars to go over this regulation.
