ARTICLE
by Katie Hammock, Director of Meetings & Events - partial article published in Monday Morning Quarterback February 10, 2025 For the 18th year, the San Diego Imperial Council via Scouting America will host and honor one of construction’s own for the Annual Construction and Building Industry Lunch-O-Ree. This year’s Scouting America honoree is none other than construction workforce tycoon Mark Filanc, CEO of FILANC. Not only has Mark been an influential member of AGC San Diego as a former AGC president (2011), EGCA honoree, and instrumental force in his namesake, the J.R. Filanc Construction Engineering and Management Program, but he (and his family) represent three generations of Eagle Scouts: Jack Filanc (founder of FILANC, 1995 AGC President), Mark Filanc Sr. (2011 AGC President), Peter Filanc (brother to Mark Sr., 2002 AGC President), Jim Filanc (brother to Mark Sr.), and Mark Filanc Jr. Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 8, at the Paradise Point Resort & Spa. Register here to support the girls and boys involved in scouting with updated facilities. PROGRAM As usual, this event features a reception at 11:30 AM followed by the program at 12:00 PM. The keynote speaker is Vice Admiral John Mustin (retired), Chief of Navy Reserve, N095 in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. While Mustin was born in San Diego County, he resided in Alexandria, Virginia. Hailing from a naval family recognized by the naming of a guided missile destroyer (USS MUSTIN [DDG 89]), he reached the pinnacle of his military service as Chief of Navy Reserve and Commander, Navy Reserve Force at the Pentagon. Impressive in his own right, Mustin commanded 60,000 personnel across the globe and managed a $3.7B annual budget in his role. Selected for command six times, and a decorated veteran of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, in 2019, he became the first reserve officer to command a U.S. Navy Strike Group when he assumed command of Expeditionary Strike Group TWO in Norfolk, Virginia. Even more compelling is the amazing story his life and his family tell. His great grandfather, Captain Henry C. Mustin, a naval aviator, established the first naval air station and launched the first aircraft from a ship underway. Two U.S. Navy destroyers bear the name Mustin in honor of his great grandfather and his descendants. This is also the only family with three three-star admirals in its lineage! His track record in the space of military, digital, and technological innovation is nothing short of remarkable, and it will be quite an honor to hear from him this year! SCOUTING 2024 was a great year for scouting, teaching life skills of character development, civic responsibility, and fitness. Here are the highlights that your contribution or attendance could impact this year: 6,500 youth served 289 young men and women earned the rank of Eagle Scout 68,790 community service hours 14,785 merit badges earned (core subject learning awards) These achievements wouldn't be possible without generous financial donors and event sponsors for events just like this one. Sponsorships ranging from $250-$20,000 are still available for those interested in supporting Scouting America. Individual tickets are available for purchase for $250. These and other advertising opportunities are open to attendees of the event as well as donors unable to attend the event. Reach out to Joe Garcia at Joseph.Garcia@scouting.org for more details.
