SDSU Electrical Team Takes Home Third Place in ASC Student Competition

The San Diego State University (SDSU) Electrical team placed third out of 14 teams in the ASC Open Student Competition! The team’s chemistry, dedication, and support from their team sponsor/coaches at Helix Electric were factors to securing a trophy this year.

SDSU Electrical Team

“Our team’s success came by learning from the past and not staying down, Team Captain Elizabeth Cravioto Guerra shared. “Despite it being the first ASC competition for most of the team, everyone rose to the occasion and fully committed. But what truly set us apart was our team dynamic. We bonded and formed friendships beyond the competition, allowing us to lean on each other and succeed together.”

This is SDSU’s second win in four years, and fourth win for the Electrical team since 2015! Send the Electrical team some kudos on our Instagram post: Click here.

The ASC Region 6 & 7 Competition is one of the largest student construction competitions in the nation with 241 teams from 57 schools participating. In the crowd were 30 students from San Diego State University! The competition included 19 schools from California alone.

Prior to this major competition, a buzz of excitement filled the air as a crowd of over 1,700 college students waited to enter the kick-off student dinner of the ASC Region 6 & 7 Competition. While that excitement may have transitioned to stress during the competition, the camaraderie between teams and schools was one of support throughout.

This two-day competition put students in teams of six and provides them with a real world construction problem to solve based on each competition category. San Diego State University (SDSU) teams readied to compete in Commercial, Heavy Civil, Preconstruction, and Electrical.

The SDSU students prepared for months with the help and support of AGC’s San Diego Construction Leadership Council (CLC), team sponsors, SDSU faculty advisors, and industry coaches. Special shoutout to our team sponsors and coaches:

Electrical – Helix Electric
Scott Massner, Lia Hodge, Eduardo Nunez, Bryce Kepler, and Noah Sanchez

Commercial - Clark Construction
Josie Dintino, Ryan Henderson, and Mariam Yousif

Heavy Civil – FILANC
Tony Ruiz, Michelle Filanc, Andrea Farias, Edward Chavez, Matt Appleton, Jeff Rangan, and Jessica Gutierrez

Preconstruction - Swinerton
Kyle Butler, Kelsey Maris, Jose Gudino and Rick Collette

A big shoutout to SDSU Faculty Advisors: Thais Alves, Nensi Lakrori, Juhyeon Bae, Reza Akhavian, and Takis Mitropoulos, as well as CLC Chair Aaron Magdaleno for attending and supporting the student teams.

For some teams, the competition started the week prior, when they had to complete pre competition tasks, but the real work started in Reno early Thursday morning. The students got to work in their workrooms, with each student focused as they completed needed tasks for their team and competition problem. The teams were challenged throughout the day with updates to the problem including change orders and updated owner requests to see how the students would adapt to real-world scenarios.

What came next? The deadline to turn in their proposals. Witnesses were engrossed by the students as they made the mad dash, running the halls to make it in time to turn in their proposals and experience the relief that Day 1 was complete. Day 2 would require the teams to present to the problem sponsor, so some teams stayed behind to practice and perfect their presentations.

Then, it was time to watch the SDSU teams! First up was the Electrical team in the open competition, followed by the Heavy Civil team and Preconstruction teams (presenting at the same time but in different rooms), and then the Commercial team, who rounded out the SDSU teams in the Region 7 competition.

This year, SDSU teams had a mixture of new and returning members. While only the Electrical Team placed this year, the teams worked hard and their dedication during (and prior to) the competition makes SDSU and AGC proud!

SDSU 2025 ASC Competition Teams & Supportors

The SDSU AGC Student Chapter, along with AGC’s support, organized the teams and coordinated the preparations for the competition. This year’s Student Chapter Reno Lead, Andrea Alaniz, collaborated with all teams and coordinated with AGC for a successful student experience.

Finally, if you are reading this, and you were a team coach, or a "Mock Problem" spectator this year who challenged and provided feedback to the teams to prepare them for the competition, please give yourself a pat on the back.

Thank you for your involvement and for helping ready the students who compete in this competition. They will surely graduate from this program and from SDSU to take their place as excellent future leaders of the construction industry.
