Last night, AGC San Diego took home the “Chapter of the Year” award for providing excellent service to members working through a crisis-filled 2020, while continuing to build for the future. The trophy was presented by AGC of America President, Bob Latham, Jr, Williams Brothers Construction Co., Inc. (2nd from right) at the awards dinner attended by chapter board officers and chapter executives from across the United States. The impacts of COVID-19 dominated 2020. The San Diego Chapter was recognized for its efforts to keep construction open and safely working during the pandemic, through partnerships, advocacy, and providing timely resources for its members. While responding to the demands of COVID-19, and working remotely for much of 2020, the San Diego Chapter was able to continue its ongoing advocacy work and make significant progress on long term projects critical to the future of the industry: Raised and spent over $500,000 on local candidates and initiatives. Successfully defended Proposition A - PLA Ban at City of San Diego. Completed construction of 44,000 sq. ft. Headquarters and Training Center in Lakeside. Inked partnership with (WECA) to expand training opportunities. Funded and launched Construction Management Degree Program at SDSU Built new membership database and website to enhance member services. Hosted the largest Blood Drive in San Diego County Signed agreement with Black Contractors Association to enhance diversity and inclusion in the construction industry. While in-person meetings were limited, AGC San Diego kept its membership engaged through virtual meetings, regular COVID updates, and direct assistance from chapter staff helping members navigate the challenges of 2020. The result was over 95% member retention, 64 new members, and record dues collection for the year. The success of the San Diego Chapter is the result of years of strong and capable leadership from the AGC Board of Directors, including 2020 President Bill Haithcock of Casper Company. Under President Haithcock’s guidance the San Diego Chapter was able to meet the unexpected challenges of the year, while completing multi-year projects that will serve the construction industry for generations to come.
